The productions of the Kalevala in Ranua and certain individual
performances in Western Lapland have done a great deal of important
work in the field of winter art. This artistic activity has inspired
and activated entire villages. The performances represent traditional
outdoor theater in which snow, ice and light have been used as the
props and the stage. The picture shows The Wedding, put on in Ranua
in the winter theater in 1999 as part of the Kalevala project. Ilmarinen
is trying catch a pike from the River Tuoni.
